- NewTek sells a piece of hardware called a Toaster that ships with the
- Toaster software that includes LightWave. Will NewTek simply stop
- upgrading the version of Lightwave that ships with the Toaster?

- Seriously, the point I'm getting at is that NewTek has made a bunch of
- money from Toaster sales and now, Video Flyer sales. The Flyer is linked
- intimately to the Toaster which is Amiga only. If NewTek maintains support
- for the Flyer and Toaster, I would expect that new releases of LightWave
- will be included with updates to Toaster and Flyer software.
-
- They have also made a bunch of money from standalone Lightwave sales and I
- expect that they will make even more when the different ports ship. Maybe
- the sales will be great enough to warrant letting the Toaster version lag,
- or perhaps become static and encourage Toaster users to move to a
- different platform if they want the newest Lightwave. But then, what about
- Flyer users that want to dump their animations to the Flyer? I guess they
- will network Amiga's, SGI's, Alpha's, and the odd PC so that they can eat
- their cake and have it too. What about Toaster users that use Lightwave
- in their production? I suppose that the same answer for the Flyer users
- goes here, too. What about hobbyists and casual users? You have a tough
- decision to make. New hardware isn't cheap, but I bet by the time
- Lightwave support dissapears (if it really does), a P90 will be pretty
- cheap. It will probably also be sorely outdated.
-
- Remember too ,not everyone who bought a Toaster bought it for Lightwave.
- Many wanted the other couple of features the Toaster has too (like me) :)
- As long as NewTek supports and updates Toaster and Flyer hardware, I bet
- that we will see continued support for Amiga updates of Lightwave
- regardless of sales on other platforms and regardless of the state of the
- Amiga technology; at least for the next couple of years.
-
- I suppose that NewTek could drop the Toaster and Flyer or perhaps make a
- port to the PC and just drop the Amiga. but I don't suspect that the Amiga
- support will fail until the Amiga is fully dead and the majority of
- Toaster and/or flyer users have moved on.
-
- In a post some time ago, Stuart Furgeson affirmed that NewTek will be
- releasing Lightwave 4.0 for the Amiga and probably the next update, too.
-
- What will kill Lightwave on any platform, Amiga, SGI, or whatever, will be
- the Plug In developers. I fear that unless NewTek gets in the loop
- somehow, third party Plug In folk will drive the market to the hardware
- that they see fit to develop for. See the thread, "Lightwave Plug Ins"
- for opinions about how Plug In support may affect what hardware you choose
- to use.
